The Floating World of Ukiyo-E: Shadows, Dreams, and Substance
Published in Hardcover by Harry N Abrams (September, 2001)
Average review score:

a first-rate addition to any Japanese art libraryWriting on Edo-period Japanese prints tends to be dominated by studies of single artists, print series by single artists, and chronological histories. Against this background, "The Floating World of Ukiyoe: Shadows, Dreams, and Substance," produced in conjunction with an exhibition, is a most welcome contribution. Here the emphasis is on showcasing a diverse and rarely seen collection--the woodblock prints and woodblock-printed books of the Library of Congress-- and on presenting expert essays that put the genre of "ukiyoe" in a broad aesthetic and social context. Added bonuses include such features as the "raking light" photograph on page 118, which illustrates the effects created by print embossing. "The Floating World" has been superbly designed by Abrams and well edited. It is worth noting too that the index has been prepared with exceptional care. Meanwhile, the bibliography--which covers 309 items and runs more than 20 pages--is a wonderful guide to woodblock-printed books in the Library of Congress: for scholars of Japanese art, culture, and publishing, this alone will justify acquisition of this book.

Flying Manual, 1932 (Flying & Gliding Series)
Published in Paperback by E A A Aviation Foundation (June, 1985)
Average review score:

A different time, a different countryIf this book is the same as the 1932 original (which I've read), it is a fascinating book. I believe this book is a compendium of a periodical published 1932-1933. There are articles about building and flying a Pietenpol (either the Sky Scout or Aircamper), and other projects. In this era, you could build a plane for peanuts--Spruce was in ample supply, every farmer knew how to weld, and those wooden garage floors were great building jigs for a fuselage. When it was time to cover the aircraft, you could get the muslin down at Woolworths. This is a great book for anyone interested in learning about this era in aviation. Pietenpol plans are still available from the decendants of Bernie Pientenpol. The information presented here is not complete enough in this modern age to build an airplane, but you will have an idea of how they did it in 1932. A fascinating time-capsule from a bygone era of aviation.
Added 1/5/2002: This book is the same as the original, and includes articles on building a Pietenpol Aricamper, a Heath biplane glider, and other articles on building techniques and reducing the drag on an aircraft. The modern-day plans for the Aircamper have changed a bit, and this book is of special interest to Aircamper builders who would like to see some of the history of this remarkable early homebuilt.

Footnotes: Six Choreographers Inscribe the Page (Critical Voices in Art, Theory, and Culture)
Published in Paperback by Routledge (01 July, 1998)
Average review score:

Steps across boundariesA wonderful multidisciplinary approach which shows that Dance can be political and literary, in addition to being physical and visual. Engages the reader to consider dance and choreography in a new way -- including that there need not be an edge to the stage, i.e. that the stage can be the world so that the performance can even be the self of the "viewer."

Forest Farming: Towards a Solution to Problems of World Hunger and Conservation
Published in Paperback by Intermediate Technology (August, 1985)
Average review score:

An excellent introduction to forest permacultureThis book argues for a better, more sustainable, and ultimately more sane way to farm: forest permaculture (forest farming). Forest permaculture is a technique of planting long-lived trees typically together with shrubs and herbs or grasses in a multi-tier ecosystem that achieves a steady state and produces food year after year without plowing or tilling, without the need for any farming machinery, and without any herbicides or fertilizers. This technique usually produces much higher yields than conventional farming, and it can be adapted to most climates, from temperate to equatorial. Writted by two well-known experts who have devoted their lives to advancing these techniques, this book is packed with excellent arguments, examples, and references, including a very comprehensive bibliography and list of organizations working in the area. It is a great introduction to the subject, although probably not a complete how-to guide. Nonetheless I think anyone who wants to know more permaculture or is considering adopting the same techniques needs to have this book handy. Also, this book would certainly be of great interest to anyone interested in the ideas and philosophy of E.F. Schumacher (author of "Small is Beautiful").

Forgive Us Our Trespasses
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (January, 1977)
Average review score:

A Beautiful Story of Love and ForgivenessThis story is a tear-jerker. I stayed up all night reading it. It is a touching story of how forgiveness (or lack of it) can completely change the way you look at life. Lloyd Douglas carfully weaves a story that not any ordinary author could have written. Each page leaves you waiting to see what change the next will bring. I'd definetly classify it among the best books I've read.
